El Centro, Ca. – May 2, 2024 – The City of El Centro Library is offering hiking backpack kits and new travel books available for check out for novice to intermediate hikers and travelers.
The Southern California Library Cooperative grant provided 21 backpacks that can be checked out for up to 3 weeks at a time. A patron is able to check out a park pass along with the backpack, good for hiking at state parks. The Library also added new books on hiking and dozens of travel books to places near El Centro, like San Diego and as far as Europe.
“Our library is continuously seeking innovative activities for our community,” said El Centro Mayor Sylvia Marroquin. “This backpack program is a perfect example of igniting the curiosity of traveling, regionally or worldwide.”
The backpacks contain a trekking pole, binoculars, a compass, survival equipment, and more. “These backpacks are a way to promote a healthy lifestyle for our community who may be interested in hiking, but don’t know where to start,” said El Centro Library Director Carla Mason. “Our Library can help you get started with information and equipment.”
