Minor damage reported in the City of El Centro due to seismic activity

El Centro, Ca. – February 12, 2024 – The recent seismic activity caused damage to a fourplex apartment building in the City of El Centro. The building suffered a waterline break when a water heater tipped over, which caused minor flooding. No injuries were reported. No other damage or injuries in the City has been reported. A total of 11 of residents were displaced from the apartment building.

The City of El Centro urges residents to take proactive precautions with seismic activity. Drop, cover, and hold on during earthquake activity. Dropping to your hands and knees protects you from being knocked down and allows you to crawl into a protected space.

Covering your head and neck with your arms protects you from falling items. Crawl under a sturdy table or desk nearby. Hold on to the table or desk as things will be moving. Check your home or business for broken gas or water lines. If you suspect a gas line break, exit your home or business and call your gas company. If you suspect a water line break, call the El Centro Public Works Department at 760-337-4505 to shut off the water.
