Freight train derails in the City of El Centro; no threat to public reported

El Centro, Ca. – July 2, 2024 – A freight train derailed at around 2 a.m., early on July 2, just east of the railway intersection with Sixth Street in the City of El Centro.

The incident occurred at a 90-degree bend in the tracks, causing ten railcars to overturn, with eight of them coming to rest on their sides. All of the railcars were empty and none of them were carrying hazardous materials. No injuries were reported.

There is no threat to the public or disruption to local traffic as a result of this incident. Union Pacific representatives are on-site and have stated that the railcars will be back in service within 24 hours.
