About Us

The City Attorney is general counsel of the City and Successor Agency to the Redevelopment Agency. The City Attorney reports directly to the City Council. The office provides a full range of legal services to the City, Successor Agency, and manages outside special counsel. The City Attorney is the chief legal advisor to the City Council, City Manager, operating departments, and all appointed boards and commissions. The Legal Division evaluates projects and their legal issues and provides recommended options to minimize legal risk and ensure due process in City decisions.

The City Attorney has authority to enforce El Centro’s City Code and to represent the City in litigation. In addition, the City Attorney either prepares or approves for legal content proposed ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents. 

The City Attorney does not provide free legal advice or service to private citizens.
