League of California Cities President Appointment
Cheryl Viegas-Walker
Founded in 1898, the League of California Cities advocates to defend and expand the local control in the Legislature, at the ballot box and in the courts and through strategic outreach to the public, policymakers and opinion leaders. In recent years the League of California Cities protected hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for cities and challenged legislative threats to local control. *
Recently, Mayor Cheryl Viegas-Walker was elected by the League of California Cities Board of Directors to serve as its 2020-2021 President. Mayor Viegas-Walker was installed on October 9, 2020. “It is an honor to serve as president for the leading voice of California cities,” said League President Viegas-Walker. “These are challenging times and I look forward to working with the League board and staff, member cities and community stakeholders as we strive to create a more diverse, inclusive and equitable cities for all of Californians.”** Aside from her service as the President of the League of California Cities, Viegas- Walker comes into her position with a continued mission of making life better for the Imperial Valley as well as our region. She states, “being on the Board, and now President of Cal Cities, allows me to directly advocate for El Centro, Imperial County, and this region. We have unique challenges and opportunities and being President gives us a seat at both the state and federal level to ensure that our voice is heard and our issues are elevated to be on par with all other cities -- big and small.” While serving as President, her agenda contains valuable projects that will benefit all. “As president, I am committed to accomplishing the Strategic Advocacy Priorities adopted by the Cal Cities Board on December 11, 2020.”
• Secure state and federal funding for local COVID-19 public health response and economic recovery.
• Secure funding to increase the supply and affordability of housing and resources to assist individuals at risk or are already experiencing homelessness.
• Improve state-local coordination and planning to strengthen community disaster preparedness, resilience, and recovery.
• Protect and modernize critical infrastructure.
